Internal Iron Brewer
« on: September 21, 2011, 10:22:33 AM »

I had this idea to do an internal Iron Brewer project, have banded it about with a few others and there seems to be some interest.

For those unaware of the original Iron Brewer, basically you are given a set of ingredients and have 8 weeks to brew a beer using all the ingredients and then send a couple of bottles to each of the other participants.

The current challenge, which was posted on September 8th, is to brew a beer with:

  • rye malt 3-4 Lovibond
  • sorachi ace hops
  • Weihenstephan Weizen yeast

for more details see this link: http://ironbrewer.com/category/brew-off/

So, I am wondering if there is any further interest in doing something like this on a purely internal basis, using the same ingredients as posted by Iron Brewer. For those interested in doing this first project, we could have the beers ready for the November meeting.

Any thoughts, comments?

I'm fairly new to homebrewing, and live in Charlottesville, and would be interested in this also.  Let me know if/when it happens!

A note to those interested...
There has been discussion amongst some of us that we wanted more interesting/experimental sorts of ingredients. This is typically the case with Iron Brewer and the latest ingredients were a bit of an anomaly.  Peter Kennedy, one of the guys behind Iron Brewer, selected 3 new ingredients for us to use:
Chocolate Malt
Palisades Hops
Raw Blue Agave Nectar (http://mybrands.com/Product.aspx?pid=4513 / http://www.wholeandnatural.com/servlet/the-13/Wholesome-Sweeteners-Organic-Raw/Detail#.ToNp6s1zVT8 )

Do you guys like these ingredients more?  What are the dates for recipe disclosures and bringing brews to the meeting?
And should we do a prize or just do it for kicks?

Those ingredients look way better than the previous. Hefe yeast--yuck. Depending on the timing of this event, I'd participate.

Where are you guys getting agave nectar from? Anyone know if Whole Foods, IY, or Food of All Nations carries it?

I think I've seen agave at Kroger.  Sounds like fun.

We discussed this Iron Brewer thing last night amongst several of us that are doing beers for it. We're going to bring them to the December meeting instead of November.

Working backwards, I think this means I need to brew by Nov 1st to have it ready by 2nd Tuesday of December.  Which means I need to order some ingredients!

I am guessing you are not strictly limited to the three ingredients, right?  Is the idea that if one of the ingredients is Chocolate Malt, that you need to use enough so that someone could tell there is Chocolate malt in it?

I saw Blue Agave nectar at Giant the other day - I think it might have been in the organic aisle, although can't remember for sure.

Does Timberwood let you bring homebrew into their restaurant?

To answer your questions, the idea behind Iron Brewer is that the resulting beer feature the main ingredients and be a well made and interesting beer.  You can, of course, use other ingredients, but the three special ingredients need to shine in the final beer.

Timberwood does let us bring homebrew into the meetings.  We end each meeting with a general homebrew tasting and feedback session, which is very free form.  The only rules are that samples are limited to 2 oz pours and must be presented for the purposes of receiving feedback.

Hope that is helpful.

Just brewed mine yesterday!  The airlock smells, er, interesting.

Are you still planning to bring them to the Dec meeting?  Do we post the recipe eventually?  How many different beers do you think you'll get?

Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting feedback

James,

I brewed mine today.  I think the plan is still to bring them along to the December meeting.  More information will probably be coming at the November meeting, but I would guess that contestants will at least present a little bit of information about their beer and bringing a recipe is a good idea too.
