$10 grain mill
« on: November 28, 2009, 08:51:06 PM »

I'm an extract w/steeped grains brewer, so the quantities of grain I use are small compared to all-grain brewers.  But nonetheless, I still like to have my grains milled as fresh as possible. I hate having to buy a pound of milled grains when my recipe only calls for a couple ounces or a half pound.  Seems like a waste, but I don't want to use stale grains either.  So I've been considering a grain mill.  The corona mills, while purportedly the cheapest option, don't appeal to me much.  I don't like the crush (from what I've seen online).  The barley crusher is very nice (I've used Greg B's) but is overkill and way too expensive for what I want to do. Behold, I find this forum thread:
http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/using-pasta-maker-mill-grain-75784/
I picked up a pasta machine from JoAnn's on Black Friday for $10, well worth the price for this experiment.  I gotta say, I followed the advice on that forum, and this thing works like a champ!!!  I'm bringing samples of some crushed grain to the December meeting to get opinions on the setting, and so you guys can see for yourselves what my $10 grain mill produces.  I'm looking forward to hooking my drill up to this thing to see what it can really do.  Would the pasta maker/grain mill work for an all-grain brewer?  Tough to say.  Time will tell.  But I would say it's an ideal option for the brewer that needs a couple of pounds at most for a brew session.

Cool idea, Greg.  People are so innovative.  My brother was just telling me that he has borrowed a grain mill from a friend that was made out of an old printer or copy machine.  I guess the rollers on that model are made of stainless steel and his friend removed their rubber covering and had the rollers gnarled in some fashion.  He then added an extension that allowed it to be hooked to a drill and presto - working mill out of old computer parts.  Again, people's innovative projects in this hobby always amaze me.
