Keiler Weissbier - Dunkelweiss
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:20:25 PM »

A good friend of mine just returned from a month long trip to Germany, Czech Republic, and Romania. He brought back some beers and this is the first I have opened up. Judging from BeerAdvocate it can be found in the US, but I have not seen it around here (too bad).

It came in a nice .5l flip top bottle, and as you can see from the picture, poured a very opaque chestnut brown with a creamy head (the traces of head left in the picture lasted through out the entire glass). As soon as the pour started I could smell bread, honey, banana and a bit of cloves; no hop aroma at all. The mouth feel was creamy (not quite chewy). The flavor was of rich honey wheat bread with banana, cloves and nutmeg; slightly sweet with a slight hop bitterness left on the tongue with the spice flavors. Despite the richness it had a surprisingly clean finish, not really dry, but not sweet either.

I really need to find where I can get this dunkel in the US. It was really top notch and I could have gladly had three or four this afternoon while watching football. Thanks again to my friend, Dustin, for bringing this one back.

That looks fantastic.  Dunkels are definitely one of my favorite German beer styles.
