Brewing Software
« on: August 16, 2009, 10:48:18 AM »

Hi,
I've taken inventory of all my supplies and I'm wondering if there's software out there that can help me manage it as well as build recipes based on what's on hand?

I've heard good things about Pro-Mash, but I only use a Mac. (I refuse to start my Vista PC - what a poor excuse for an OS!)

Anyone play with any online sites that store your data?

What else to people like?

Thanks,

I like BeerSmith, which I have been using for about a year.  I use it primarily for the brewing calculators, as I still maintain written brew logs, but my brother uses it to manage complete brewing sessions and recipes.  I know that it has the ability to track your inventory and plan recipes based on what you have on hand.  You can also use it to track costs and it can estimate how much it will cost you to brew an individual recipe.  When I get around to start buying some grain and hops in bulk, I will probably use this feature.

I would recommend you check it out.

Christopher,

I found a couple of references to BrewBlogger recently (http://www.brewblogger.net/).  It looks to be a free homebrewing calculation, logging, and recipe software.  It sets up on a server that you must control.  It might even be possible to set it up on our CAMRA server.  Anyway, it looks neat, so I would recommend you checking it out.

Thanks Tom!
(I'm using Google Docs at the moment and I'm thinking, if I share this with the group, they may have some good suggestions too.)

I think that is a great idea.  Good luck with the software hunt.  I have found having a good series of tools available on my desktop to be invaluable.  However, prior to getting BeerSmith, I had decent success using a variety of free web tools on various homebrewing sites (strike temp, alpha-acid conversions, IBU calculators, etc.).
