Can one use unfiltered apple cider to make hard cider?
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:01:41 AM »

So, since what's sold in gallon jugs as "apple cider" is apparently "apple juice" without being filtered (from what I've read).  (It's got a better flavor than apple juice in my opinion.).

Can you make hard cider from it?  What's it like?

Also, can you buy "Apple Juice" made from specific apples, or is all like Gallo wine - a blend?

What I've tasted of clear, pretty,  hard cider just doesn't float my boat.  (Woodchuck brand and even some brought to the first club homebrew tasting.)  Maybe it's not tart enough. Possibly the type of apples.  Even unfiltered cider with certain apples isn't "right".  Golden Delicious is a "no-no" in cider in my opinion.  Any of the sweet flavored "good for eating" apples (Red Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Honey Crisp, Rome, etc.) wouldn't be good.

ANYBODY PRESS THEIR OWN APPLES??  Or willing to press apples brought to them?

Scrumpy -- without the meat.  THAT might be the ticket.

Kevin, a member of CAMRA and the host of our December tasting, does a LOT with cider.  He would probably be your best bet to answer cider questions.  I know he gets cider straight from local presses during harvest time, but he would have to provide you the details on that.

Jamey found this post from Kevin about cider on another forum.  I had to post it here, just for the first picture alone . . .

Cheers, Kevin, your cider rocks!
