Jamey's Hefeweizen
« on: June 13, 2008, 06:32:46 PM »

Jamey was kind enough to give me some of his hefeweizen, so I wanted to write a quick review.  Hefe is one of the few styles that Jamey has consistently brewed, as he tends more towards experimentation.  So, I expected something good and was not disappointed.

The beer pours with a light brown color and a thick white head.  I made sure to swirl the last half of the bottle to suspend the yeast, as is traditional of the style.  The yeast made the beer appear cloudy, of course, more along the lines of a belgian wit, though darker.  The aroma had a strong banana and clove smell, along with a light malty smell, think lightly toasted bread.

The beer tasted fantastic.  There was a strong malty flavor, similar to my favorite wheat beer, dunkleweizen.  There is a nice spicy note to the beer, similar to a peppery side dish, definately present, but not overpowering.  My favorite thing about the beer is the finish, a strange combination of dryness and smoothness.  The suspended yeast made the beer have the smoothness, I think, but it is a really pleasant sensation.

Two things made me realize that I should get the recipe and try this one.  1) My glass was empty by the end of this review.  2)  My wife said "Mmmmmm, I love that!"

Thanks, Jamey.   Grin
