Spidey's Dunkelweizen
« on: April 10, 2008, 10:09:44 AM »

I had the pleasure of getting a growler of this from Spidey.

Appearance: It pours clear and amber with an off-white frothy head.

Aroma: Light to medium malt aroma, yeastiness, banana aroma dominant, cloves

Palate: Medium body, lively carbonation

Flavor: Bananas, wheat, malt, great distinct medium-long duration sweet-caramel finish with hint of bitterness

Overall: I gave this a 38/50.

On the front end, the banana aroma/flavor is dominant, but not overpowering. For my tastes, it could stand to be a bit less banana-ey, but not much (I've made wheat beers that ended up way too banana-ey, this beer doesn't fall into that category). I'm sure others who are bananas (har-har) over the banana aromas/flavors of the style will find it's perfect. It's a great beer to drink, the finish is my favorite part. It's very appropriate to the lighter end of the style.

Thanks for posting that review.  I really enjoy the dunkelweizen style and have tried to make that style a couple of times.  It is a tough one to do, as you are balancing a bunch of different characteristics (banana versus clove, malt versus spice, wheat character versus malt).  The last Jamil Show was about this style and I found it very enlightening.

I hope to try spidey's brew sometime.
