Breaking News - Tom's Hops Sighted

I just looked this morning and saw the first little bits of hop plant poking up through the ground. I have a cascade and a fuggles plant and both are now visible. This makes me quite happy as I was afraid they would not come back. Last year was my first year growing hops and they did not do super well. The tallest they got was about 3 feet off the ground. I will be using different string to allow them to trellis this year, as Jamey commented the string I used last year was too slick. However, I would welcome any other advice on how to get them going strong this year so I can have a actual crop.

Coir Yarn (Hop Twine)from Fresh Hops
Made from Coir Fibre contained in the coconut Hank and exported from Sri Lanka...
Cost $6.00/ bundle + S/H
1 bundle = 10 strings 20 ft/string
Commercial Growers have been using Coir Yarn for years
Not sure if this is key, but it sure worked well for me.

last year was my first year growing hops a friend gave me some ribosome’s not sure what variety but they seem like cascade. Ours did very well last year for growth but only yielded about 1/2 pound of dried hops. We amended the soil and then used urea for fertilizer, the urea worked well for us on several plants (side note my wife did have to give her drivers license and anther form of id to the federal government to complete the purchase, that was for only a couple of pounds at tractor supply.)
